When you hate your job, it can feel impossible to get out of bed in the mornings. Another rough day, another wasted day at a job you hate..
Millions of people are going through this cycle everyday and it would take deep structural reorganisation of working culture to make employees truly happy. It’s not realistic to expect this anytime soon. When you can’t change the work environment or your personal situation in the near time, it’s time to get tactical and start planning for the long term and near term future.
The long term plan
One thing should be clear, tactics for the long term future such as starting a job hunt or planning for a new career change could take months.
Knowing that there is an exit point to this job that you hate is capable of making you happy mildly but it’s not a solution for tomorrow. In the near time, it doesn’t solve the pain of dragging yourself to work everyday.
So what is the short term strategy then? How can you successfully turn up to a soul-sucking job without draining yourself completely out of energy?
This list assumes you have already done everything you can to change things at work with no success. Here are 10 tips you can use to survive this period:
8. Passive income sources: Try to also build up passive sources of income whilst still at your job. This could also be through side-gigs in fields you love.In this digital age, there are enough ways to make money in your sleep if you are strategic about it.
9. Build persistency and determination: Let’s face it, you need these characteristics right now, if you are going to a job you hate. Every day, you will need to give yourself pep-talks to get to work. Building this type of persistence and determination is not easy in the slightest, but neither are life’s challenges.
When you learn to pick yourself up from a bad situation (such as going to a bad job), rising from falls in life becomes second nature to you.
Life is full of ups and downs. So try to see this as a down period, which is building you up for a better future. If you weren’t unhappy at your job, it wouldn’t have pushed you to seek greener pastures and a better life. The one great certainty in life is change, so trust that this period is temporary and this will also pass. Think of this as a learning experience of how to deal elegantly with a bad job, just as you elegantly deal with joy in life.
You could also take one step further and see this as a chance, that life is giving you, to truly discover what you are passionate about and plan to achieve that. See your job as a short term sustenance until you fully switch over to your true goal.
10. Go on sick leave for a while: The first sign of a bad job is anxiety, sleepless nights, followed by stress, followed by flu, since your immune system gets weaker due to the stress. You will be paving the way for an early exit in life if you don’t take care of your physical and mental well being.
If none of the tips have worked out, then time to go on sick leave for a while. Of course don’t have to tell your boss what exactly made you ill. You can get a doctor to sign you off for a burnout and get some time off. This will help you get some distance and perspective from a bad job. Give yourself the opportunity to recover and reset before you break yourself over a bad job. It’s definitely not worth sacrificing your well-being.
